City council hopes some provincial government help might boost efforts to develop Penticton as cycling destination.
Coun. Andrew Jakubeit met with Transportation Minister Mary Polak at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Victoria which wrapped up Friday.
Jakubeit pointed to Cycling Canada magazine which recently ranked Penticton as the No. 1 area to cycle.
"Our area (has) some of the most scenic, pristine and heavily-used cycling networks utilized for high-profile sport tourism, smaller races, training groups, training and healthy lifestyle," he said.
Jakubeit said a cycling network plan in tandem with the creation of a South Okanagan cycling "precinct", the community could build on efforts to boost sport tourism. This includes mountain biking, the KVR Trail and road biking.
It is hoped that the ministry will take a leadership role in marketing the area, Jakubeit said. He also called the creation of a South Okanagan cycling network, upgraded roadways and increased cycling signage.
"Just like the South Okanagan is known for a superior wine experience, we would like to implement a strategy and plan that ensures Penticton and the South Okanagan is also known for a superior cycling experience," he said.
Council members are expected to give full reports from last week's UBCM convention at their regular meeting Monday night at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
