12/36 - what?

Those numbers represent the ideal rear cassette...

Well, at least for me they do. For you, well, if you dig climbing like there is no tomorrow, then maybe so. My new bike shipped with the standard 13/34; meaning '13 teeth on the smallest cog and 34 teeth on the largest cog' on my bike's rear cassette.

This is a pretty decent gear ratio, but for this valley; one which sports a wide variety of relentless climbs out of it - a rear cassette with a couple of extra teeth makes all the difference in the world!

I special-ordered a 12/36 cassette a few weeks after receiving my new bike - only because I had one installed on my old Norco Bigfoot 'back in the day', and loved it!

In a nutshell; if you are an 'all-mountain / XC' fan - the next time that you find a need for a new rear cassette and chain; and perhaps new front rings, order a 36-tooth rear cassette.

You will find that in the midst of your next massive ascent, you will be happy that you did.

Oh... and listen to more of this (LOUD!)
