I finally gave up on cable TV this week; as 'The Boss' would say, "57 Channels (And Nothin' On)". Picking up DVD and BluRay rentals might be an option for entertainment once in a while, but I have stumbled upon something much cooler; Netflix.ca - at a way better price than cable / satellite / rentals
Its freekin' amazing; someone has come up with a technology which allows HD (720p) movies to stream over an internet connection. It doesn't seem all that long ago that ultra low resolution, postage stamp size video clips were the norm on the Net'.
As I dig documentary programming, and consider most of what I was seeing on cable TV to be complete crap; NetFlix's content is right up my alley. They do host a good deal of movie content as well, but currently not much in the way of 'just released' product. On the other hand, NetFlix has recently (Nov. 2010) been bought into by Google, and the technological underpinnings of the product is run on Microsoft's Silverlight protocol, so available programming should mushroom in the near future.
In the meantime, NetFlix is offering a month's free viewing, no-holds-barred, and after that, access is a mere 8$ a month. I'm sold on the concept, and thought that some of you might get a kick out of it as well. The very easy to use interface works for on manner of devices, from iPhone to X-Box, PC to dedicated hardware media player. Any PC manufactured within the past three years shouldn't have any problem supplying full HD to a flat-screen monitor or PC.
Don’t be too quick to judge its content before you have time to really dig around. At first glance it seems that the service is content-shy, but soon you will figure out that they offer a whack of interesting stuff, and who knows, with input from Google and Microsoft; this could soon be the next NBC-type product. Big media providers must be scratching their heads – I bet they didn’t see this one coming…
