PACA Mid-Winter Newsletter
A Taste of what PACA is up to during the 'off season'. As always, we seek your input on anything that you hear from us.
Signage
What was originally to be signage for the Mice’ trailhead has become signage for trails in the Gillies Cr. area, aka: Sublot 18. The Mice trailhead map will have to wait until all parties receive clearance from the Ministry of Tourism, Recreation & the Arts, as they have final say on around 95% the Mice. Check out the sample Gillies Cr. signage, available as links at the bottom of this page. If you wish to provide feedback, please do so ASAP - there is an end-of-month (!) deadline on this project.
Movie Night
2009 and 2010 PACA members are invited to join us on Tuesday, Feb.1st for a free showing of “Race Across The Sky” - the story of the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race (leadvilletrail100.com ). Racers include Lance Armstrong, Dave Wiens and three-time World 24 hr Champion Rebecca Rusch. Flick’ rolls at 7pm sharp at Fibonacci’s coffee shop, downtown Penticton. Be there for a ‘mental fix’ of riding :-)
Campbell Mt. - Southern Access
On Jan. 20th, the City of Penticton is hosting a limited-seating / stakeholders meeting to gain input on the Campbell Mt. access issue; specifically, the southern slope above Pleasant Valley mobile home park. PACA supports a new route onto the mountain, based on adding a bridge over Penticton Cr., and an engineered side slope path which connects to a 4x4 track on Crown land across the creek. This track then switch-backs up the southeastern face of Campbell Mt. PACA will send two representatives to the meeting and will keep our website abreast of details (bikepenticton.com) From conversation with both hiking clubs in the community; one supports ‘any way up’, period; the other supports PACA’s version.
Land Management Breakthroughs
PACA is experiencing amazing cooperation from land management groups in the valley. We are currently working with or through BC Parks, The Ministry of Tourism, Culture & the Arts (Crown Land Mgmt.), the City of Penticton, The Nature Conservancy (via BC Parks) and The Land Conservancy (also via BC Parks). In addition, we have an excellent relationship with private land owners in several areas of the valley. In all, ‘hats off’ to all of the aforementioned groups for having an open mind when it comes to trails and mountain biking!
No Lack of Ideas
The club has a cornucopia of great ideas and projects with an eye toward improving riding and land access in 2011, they include;
-Purchase of addition trail tools
-New Tabletop for ‘DQ Table’ on Campbell Mt. (artwork welcome, contact Andrew)
-Encouraging and assisting in a new trail between Elinor Lk. FSR and the Woodwhacker’s trail
-Fundraising for the creation of a new, sanctioned, blue-rated trail in the upper Carmi area
-Work toward the Pepsi Challenge concept (trail bursary) for 2012
-An expanded 2011 Bike Fest, including Nic & Shea’s Enduro course, and in 2012, a DH course
-Hosting an editor and photographer from DirtRag Mag for one week in 2011
-Encouraging presentations from the Penticton Indian Band, Nature’s Trust and The Land Conservancy
-Opening dialogue with the P.I.B over legal land use / access
-First trail project of 2011 - a 200m reroute of the Campbell Mt. Canyon Trail (Campbell Classic Loop)
-PACA Earth Day celebrations; plantings / party
-Exclusive Interior BC showing of ‘Pedal Driven’ trail documentary / feature film this spring
PACA encourages new members to join us in supporting initiatives that ensure excellent riding and additional land access. We want to hear from you!
We hope to see you at the movie night. Our ears are wide open for feedback on everything presented in this newsletter.
